最新的互联网域名调查显示，.net域名是当今互联网上使用最多最流行的域名，拥有超过两亿六千万主机使用。所说的主机是网站域名被请求时连接的一个独立的“地址”。日本顶级域名.jp是国家域名中拥有主机最多的，比位居其后的意大利.it域名有两倍多。普通的 顶级域名中排行最高的是.edu，这些域名一般属于世界各地的教育机构，还有.mil也很多，用于美国的军事组织。
